Warsaw cyclocross was held on Sunday November 9th in Warsaw, NY. Writeup courtesy of Mark Shenstone.

It was a cold day with bright sunshine, the kind of day that feels warm until the breeze hits your skin and you know it is winter. Peter O., Andy M., Rob H., and I had found our way to Warsaw for yet another Cyclocross race. Warsaw is a town park, mostly flat with a small hill on one side. Most of the course is on grass with a 60 second sprint on asphalt that surrounds the park. The real story however is the mud which wasn't deep, but nice and sticky, the stuff they call gumbo in Mississippi, the stuff that clogs brakes and doubles the wieght of your bike. After my first warm up lap I had to stop and move all four brake padsl lower so they would't stick to the ring of mud on the outside of my tire.

The open field took off aminute ahead of us old farts(40+) so we had our own race. My plan was to try and stay with Karl Faruzel and Jeff Walker. The race started with a sprint around the asphalt with me just barely hanging on. I was happy to hit the grass where those happy sprinters began to bog down a bit . I got on Karls wheel and soon he was at the front leading the way. After a short steep run up we entered the gumbo section where your wheels literally spin in place and you hope they eventually catch on something that will propel you forward. This was my chance to pass Karl as he spun in place more than I did. I took off like a scared rabbit with realization that I was in the lead. Karl caught back up to me on the asphalt section, but the next time through the gumbo I got a bigger lead and eventually I was able to build a sizeable gap.

Toward the end of the race the lead 4 from the open field passed me. It was Andy , Peter, John rRoden, and Dan Timmerman, I jumped on their wheels and followed them through the grass section. They were playing cat and mouse. To remind them how slow they were going I decided to pass them. That was their wake up call and they left me in the dust.

Andy M. in typical fashion led the final wind up to the Sprint for the open men. Dan T. squeaked them at the line on his Mt Bike with Jon, Peter and Andy inches behind.

I won the masters men with Karl 2nd and Kieth Gregory 3rd.

Next week , State Championship at Warsaw on Sunday. See you there!
