Verge NECCS Round 3: Results and Report

Clif Bar Riders Dominate the Podium Again
A perfect day for cyclo-cross greeted the riders and fans for the 13th annual Cycle-Smart International, this year at a new venue in Northampton, Massachusetts. This was third round of the Verge New England Championship Cyclo-Cross Series, and for the second day in a row, Clif Bar was the team to beat in both the men¹s and women¹s elite races.

Stewart Claims His First UCI Elite Victory
The pace in the men¹s elite race was electric from the start, as riders exploded onto the terribly steep, pine-needle ride-up, with all of the big names right at the front. Midway through the first lap Clif Bar¹s Jackson Stewart attacked and was followed by Ronnie Poelvoorde (Duratec). A chase group including Verge NECCS leader Marc Gullickson (Redline), Todd Wells (Mongoose/Hyundai), and Andy Jacques-Maynes (Clif Bar) was close behind them, and gradually reeled them in over the next two laps. Stewart continued to keep the pace high, but it was Gullickson who persisted with a series of attacks resulting in Poelvoorde being the first rider to drop from the lead group. Meanwhile, a chase group containing Ben Jacques-Maynes (Family Cycling Center), Mark McCormack (Saturn), Jeremy Powers (NCC/BikeReg.com), Jesse Anthony (Hot Tubes), Bart Bowen (Kona) and Bart Gillespie (Biogen) was working hard behind, but not making up any time on the leaders. With four laps to go, Gullickson put in a hard attack through the start-finish area, and rode solo in the lead for a lap before being caught, at which point Todd Wells and Jackson Stewart counter-attacked, leaving Andy Jacques-Maynes and Gullickson behind. Coming into the final set of barriers on the last lap, it was down to just Wells and Stewart, and Wells pulled out the big attack, bunny-hopping the uphill barriers in an attempt to drop Stewart. But Stewart responded, and the race came down to a sprint finish, that was easily won by Stewart. Andy Jacques-Maynes won the sprint for third, with Gullickson finishing fourth, and Poelvoorde rounding out the top five. Jeremy Powers was the top under-23 finisher in ninth place.

D¹Aluisio and Hall Put On a Clinic
From start to finish, the women¹s elite race was a Clif Bar affair. By the end of the first lap a lead trio containing Verge NECCS leader Mary McConnelloug (Seven Cycles), Carmen D¹Aluisio and Gina Hall (Clif Bar) had gone off the front. While the Clif Bar duo took turns at the front, McConnelloug was taking some chances, and sprinted off the front a few times in an effort to disrupt the duo¹s teamwork. But, after a couple laps of this, D¹Aluisio and Hall put the hammer down, eventually dropping McConnelloug. After that, it was all Clif Bar, as the two kept the pace high, and worked smoothly together all the way to the finish, when D¹Aluisio outsprinted Hall for the win. It was her second UCI victory in two days, and the teammates second 1-2 finish in two days. Behind them, Marianne Stover (Gearworks/SpinArts) was having an exceptional ride and caught McConnelloug midway through the race. The two battled neck and neck for the final podium spot, which McConneloug won with a late attack on the last lap.

Jamey Driscoll (GMBC/Invensys), the current Verge NECCS Junior leader, won the junior race in style, as he attacked the lead group with two laps to go and rode solo all the way to the finish. The win was his second consecutive Verge series victory, and solidified his place in the overall standings.

Clif Bar¹s Rich Maile won the Masters 35+ race, helped by Verge NECCS leader John Verheul¹s (Cycle-Smart) crash in the sand-pit halfway through the last lap. Verheul¹s second place meant that he kept the NECCS leader¹s jersey.

Other winners on the day included Tim Groesbeck in the Masters 45+, Ben Harper in the Amateur Men¹s, Jenn Magur in the B Women¹s, Greg Pelican in the B Masters, and Adam Ring in the C Men¹s.

More information on the Verge Series can be found at http://www.necyclocross.com.

Verge New England Championship Cyclo-Cross Series sponsors include Verge Sport, makers of quality custom cycling apparel; Clif Bar; Cycle-Smart-Solutions for Cycling (www.cycle-smart.com); Maxxis Tires; BikeReg.com; Pedro¹s USA; Intensepicts.com; The Ride Magazine.

Round 4 of the 2003 Verge New England Championship Cyclo-Cross Series will be the UCI Cat 3 Chainbiter 5.0 Cyclo-Cross, held at Winding Trails in Farmington, Conn. on November 30.
